Ingredients
- 1 cup pumpkin purée (plain)
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 cups oat flour
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
Method
- Heat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment.
- Beat the pumpkin and egg together until smooth, then stir in the cinnamon.
- Mix in the oat flour until a soft dough forms. It should feel like play dough, not batter.
- Pinch off small balls, flatten each one gently with a fork, and bake for 15 to 18 minutes until set.
- Cool fully before serving. These stay softer than a biscuit, which is the point.
Some dogs need a softer bite. Puppies, seniors, and any dog who has had dental work will all vote for these. They bake up tender, with a gentle pumpkin flavour and nothing in the bowl that needs a dictionary.
Because they stay soft, they also break apart easily, which makes them a kind training treat for small dogs.
Storage
Soft treats hold more moisture, so the fridge is home base for this batch.
- In the fridge in an airtight container: up to a week
- In the freezer: up to 3 months
Skip the counter for these. Soft plus room temperature plus no preservatives is a short story with a mouldy ending.
Serving by dog size
- Small dogs: 1 treat a day, broken in half if you like
- Medium dogs: 1 to 2 treats a day
- Large dogs: up to 3 treats a day
Keep total treats under 10 percent of daily calories, same as every recipe on this site.
