- 2 large sweet potatoes, scrubbed well
Method
- Heat the oven to 250°F, as low and steady as it goes. Line two trays with parchment.
- Slice the sweet potatoes lengthwise into strips about a quarter inch thick. Even thickness matters more than perfect looks.
- Lay the strips out in a single layer with space between them. Crowded slices steam instead of drying.
- Bake for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, turning once halfway, until the chews are dry, leathery, and bend without snapping or feeling soft inside.
- Cool completely on the trays. In a dehydrator, dry at 135°F for 6 to 8 hours to the same leathery finish.

Check the container every few days. Any sign of mould, any off smell, and the batch goes in the bin, no exceptions and no trimming the bad bit off.
Serving by dog size
- Small dogs: half a chew, and supervise
- Medium dogs: 1 chew a day
- Large dogs: up to 2 chews a day
Chews are for chewing, not swallowing whole. Stay nearby, and take away the last small piece when it gets to a size that fits entirely in the mouth.
